The 2025 American Gas Association (AGA) Operations Conference & Biennial Exhibition, held from May 5–8 in Aurora, Colorado, brought together over 900 operations management professionals from across North America and beyond. With more than 100 speakers delivering over 120 technical presentations, the conference covered a wide array of topics, including gas measurement, safety, environmental considerations, engineering, construction and maintenance, gas control, supplemental gas, corrosion control, and piping materials.

Key Highlights from the Conference

1. Advancements in Smart Metering Technologies

The exhibition featured approximately 250 domestic and international vendors occupying over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space. Notably, Honeywell introduced the NXU Residential Smart Gas Meter, which integrates pressure sensing and an integrated controller, setting a new standard in gas leak prevention technology. Additionally, Itron celebrated the milestone of shipping 3 million Intelis gas meters, showcasing their latest gas solutions.

2. Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Gas Operations

Artificial intelligence (AI) emerged as a significant focus, with sessions exploring its application in real-time pipeline operations, asset traceability, and risk management. Presentations highlighted how AI tools are helping utilities enhance efficiency, maintenance, and decision-making processes.

3. Emphasis on Safety and Regulatory Compliance

Safety remained a central theme, evolving from a compliance necessity to a strategic business driver. Discussions emphasized the importance of proactive safety measures and the role of technology in enhancing operational safety.

4. Workforce Development and Knowledge Transfer

With the industry facing generational turnover, workforce development and skills training were recurring themes. Sessions focused on technician education and operational training, particularly in meter maintenance and calibration.

5. Networking and Collaboration Opportunities

The conference provided ample opportunities for networking and collaboration. Attendees engaged in meaningful discussions with utilities, OEMs, and partners about extending the life of meter assets through remanufacturing and repair services, reducing costs, and improving sustainability.

"Attending the AGA Operations Conference this year gave us a unique opportunity to hear directly from utility leaders about their current challenges and future goals. There's a growing focus on accuracy, data integrity, and extending the life of smart metering assets—areas where we’re already delivering proven value to our customers."

6. Looking Ahead

Utilities and Industries is proud to support the natural gas industry by helping utilities extend the life of their meter assets through expert remanufacturing, repair, calibration, and compliance testing services. The 2025 AGA Operations Conference affirmed that innovation, reliability, and partnership are key to meeting the challenges ahead.

In support of the industry’s shift toward advanced metering infrastructure, Utilities and Industries has over 10 certified sonic provers capable of running sample testing, quality assurance, data collection, end-of-life testing, and more on most smart (ultrasonic) meters, including those from Itron, Honeywell, Sensus, and other leading manufacturers. Our capabilities ensure that utilities can confidently deploy and maintain the latest in metering technology with precision and accountability.

We’d like to thank the AGA and all the organizers for hosting another incredible conference. We look forward to continuing these conversations throughout the year and returning in 2026 with even more to offer.
